Welcome to the latest News Digest! Each week, I explore the latest developments in research data management, focusing specifically on natural sciences, and provide a concise overview. Let’s dive right in!

FAIRmat

FAIRmat is the FAIR Data Infrastructure for Condensed-Matter Physics and the Chemical Physics of Solids, a consortium of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

FARImat Tutorial Recordings on Zenodo

Last week I reported that the recordings of the 16th FAIRmat Tutorial were available on YouTube. Now the recordings were also published on Zenodo, which makes it easier to reference for future uses.

NFDI4Cat

NFDI4Cat is the consortium for sciences related to catalysis of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Videos on Data Publication and Legal Aspects of RDM

NFDI4Cat has a series of videos to explain different aspects of research data management (RDM). Now they added two new videos, one regarding Data Publication and the second one and Legal Aspects of RDM. You can find both videos below, and a link to the whole playlist of videos by NFDI4Cat.

I am by no means an expert on the legal aspects of RDM, but I want to comment on one point of the legal aspects video, and would like to hear your opinion in the comments. In the video, it is mentioned that there is no copyright on the data itself, which is generally true as far as I understand (at least for most natural science data), but it is mentioned, that CC licences can still be applied. I think there is some clarification needed, since CC licences cannot be applied if the data is copyright free, besides "public domain". This is, for example, mentioned in the FAIRmat Legal Guide (link below). What do you think? Please let me know in the comments.

NFDI4Chem

NFDI4Chem is the Chemistry consortium for the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Helpdesk collaboration

NFDI consortia from geosciences, life sciences and chemistry signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a Geo-Chem-Life Science Helpdesk Cluster. The helpdesk of the different NFDI consortia want to improve the collaboration to offer better and faster support to researchers with interdisciplinary research questions. Read more about the Memorandum on the news page of NFDI4Chem. As a side note, NFDI4Earth is also part of the Geo-Chem-Life Sciences Helpdesk Cluster.

NFDI4Earth

NFDI4Earth is the Consortium Earth System Sciences of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Zenodo uploads

Updates to tow project reports were published on Zenodo. The first one is an updated milestone report on the NFDI4Earth modular course materials. If you are interested in how the courses are planned, published and developed (as well as an overview of existing course), I highly recommend to check out this report.

The second report is an updated on the deliverable report on the OneStop4All service. OneStop4All is the central access point to all NFDI4Earth services.

FAIR RDM for Chemists Workshop with NFDI4Chem

Last week was part of another FAIR Research Data Management: Basics for Chemists workshop by NFDI4Chem, this time at University of Stuttgart. Participants of the workshop were mainly researchers from the CRC 1333 which allowed us to focus on the specific needs of data management in the CRC and their disciplines. The collaboration with NFDI4Chem is always a great fun, and making the chemistry-specific workshop of the NFDI4Chem even more specific and fitting for the CRC 1333 brought me great joy.

It is nothing new, but I want to take the chance here again to advertise discipline-specific workshops. If you are a trainer or work with people on RDM topics. Make the training and examples as close to their research field as possible. It makes the communication much, much easier.
