Welcome to the News Digest – RDM in Natural Science. Each week, I explore the latest developments in research data management, focusing specifically on natural sciences, and provide a concise overview. Let us dive right in.

NFDI4Chem

Environmentally friendly research data management

The recording of a talk regarding environmentally friendly research data management by Giacomo Lanza and Janine Straka is now available on the YouTube Channel of NFDI4Chem. The slides were already published in Zenodo a few weeks back. I rarely see this discussed in the RDM community, so definitely I recommend checking out the recording.

NFDI4Earth

Modular training course

Flagging this publication for all people involved in providing RDM trainings, and OERs. It is a very interesting read, how NFDI4Earth is organising their training materials, written by Farzaneh Sadeghi and Carsten Keßler, and I also would recommend to check out the Educational Portal of NFDI4Earth.

Extended service catalogue

A similar view behind the curtain as given with the modular training courses is also provided for the service catalogue of NFDI4Earth by Claudia Müller et al.. Great summary and I think very interesting for all RDM professionals.

New opportunity for Atom Force Microscopy data

Sharing this article by Mansoor Nellikkal on publishing Atom Force Microscopy (AFM) data for all the researchers working in the AFM field. This is your opportunity to finally publish all the data that has not made it into a publication. In the article, Mansoor Mellikkal describes how in AFM research many AFM images are generated, but only a few of them are actually published, but now there is a new opportunity. Learn more in the article on the PSDI webpage.

For all the RDM professionals reading this, please share this opportunity with your researchers and make them.

White paper: ELNs in Chemistry - From implementation to sustainable stewardship

A comprehensive white paper on the implementation of electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) in chemistry was published by Samantha Pearman-Kanza and Matthew Partridge in Zenodo. In the white paper, the authors discuss the ELN selection and implementation process, as well as the change management that is necessary for a successful implementation. It is a great resource for all people involved in establishing an ELN and helps to ask the key questions. Along with the white paper, there is also a slide deck as well as some figures on the steps to implementing an ELN, the ELN life cycle and more. Well worth checking out and adding to your references and workflows for ELN implementation.
