Welcome to the latest News Digest! Each week, I explore the latest developments in research data management, focusing specifically on natural sciences, and provide a concise overview. Let’s dive right in!

MaRDI

MaRDI is the Mathematical Research Data Initiative, a consortium of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

12th newsletter is out

The latest newsletter by MaRDI covers a lot of interesting topics, and as always, I can not discuss all of them here, but I want to highlight two things. The first thing is also the main article of the newsletter, and it is the MaRDI Packaging System - MaPS. MaPS helps researchers to easier package a software inside a functional environment to make it available for others (e.g. in addition to an article submission). In comparison to other tools like Docker, MaPS should be easier for researchers to use. Follow the links below to the official documentation and check out the interview with Aaruni Kaushik, the principal developer of MaPS.

The other thing I want to highlight is the MaRDI Portal, where all 15 services of MaRDI are shown in a nice overview, which makes it straightforward to keep an overview, get some basic information about the services. Highly recommend to check out the portal. I also recommend to brows through the full newsletter.

NFDI4Chem

NFDI4Chem is the Chemistry consortium for the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

New Stammtisch recording available

In September 2024, Prof. Sonja Herres-Pawlis, Dr. Gerd Blanke and Nauman Khan talked about the latest developments with InChI (International Chemical Identifier). Check out the video below.

New Zenodo uploads

On the E-Science-Tag in Heidelberg, NFDI4Chem presented two posters, one regarding publishing standards in chemistry and the other on the federated repositories in NFDI4Chem. Both give a great overview and are now available on Zenodo.

NFDI4Earth

NFDI4Earth is the Consortium Earth System Sciences of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Code for Earth Challenges 2025

Each year, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) offers the Code for Earth Challenges. This year there are 15 challenges in three streams:
Stream 1 - Data Visualization for Earth Sciences Applications
Stream 2 - Machine Learning for Earth Sciences Applications
Stream 3 - Software Development for Earth Sciences Applications

Until 1st April, you can apply with your proposal to address one of the challenges. Learn more about the ECMWF Code for Earth Challenges from the report of NFDI4Earth and the information provided there.

PSDI

PSDI is the Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure in the UK.

Recording of PSDI Webinar on NOMAD

If you have been following this News Digest already for a while, NOMAD (by FAIRmat) is nothing new to you. In December 2024, FAIRmat was a guest on the PSDI Webinar and the recording is now available on the YouTube Channel of PSDI. The NOMAD introductions are always very nice and get to the point. I specifically liked that this time a big part of the talk was on the topic of Getting started with NOMAD (check out the video below). Find out more about the PSDI Webniar in the links provided below.

New Zenodo upload

Slides from a presentation by Samantha Pearman-Kanza regarding semantic web technologies and their usage in the physical sciences are now available on Zenodo. By now, I think very body knows (or should know) that Samantha Pearman-Kanza uses Memes like nobody else (I know). So it is always a joy to check out new presentations, and oh boy, there are some highlights in this one. Check it out! I hope these presentations keep coming.

The FAIR Elephant

Learn more about the offering and services that I offer through The FAIR Elephant here.

I am very much looking forward to this week. On Thursday and Friday I will be at the Forschungszentrum Jülich giving a two-day workshop on the topic of research data management with the Digital Research Academy. I added some new exercises and examples specific to the Forschungszentrum Jülich, and I am very grateful that the Central Library took the time to discuss with me some of their services and tools. I think this significantly improves the workshop and the relevance for the participants. This is also what I would recommend for everybody, if you are at a different institution, company or else, talk to the look teams. Teaching RDM should be as close as possible to your participants, so let's include some local information, tools and contacts.

You can follow me on BlueSky if you want to see some impressions from the workshop.

That was it for today. Thank you for reading and see you next week!
