News Digest – RDM in Natural Science: Week 13
Welcome to this weeks news digest let us directly start.
FAIRmat – NOMAD video tutorial
FAIRmat published two videos on YouTube from their FAIRmat Tutorial 12. The first one is an introduction to FAIRmat, NOMAD and NOMAD Oasis. In case you have no idea what NOMAD or NOMAD Oasis is about, I highly recommend checking out the following ten minutes of the video (from 9:40 – 19:00):
One thing I like so much about NOMAD and NOMAD Oasis is perfectly put into words by Markus Scheidgen: “every piece of information has its exact place” or at least it should have in the future. I think this is one of the very important aspects when we are talking about FAIR data and FAIR data management. And this is also the reason why training in how to handle our data is so important. Which is also shown by the fact, that the two videos are already the 12th tutorial by FAIRmat. You can check out the second video here. It is a hands-on tutorial on working with Jupyter notebooks in NOMAD, writing data schema, parsers and much more. I haven’t had the opportunity to do the tutorial, but I definitely will.
NFDI4Chem – Newsletter is out
The NFDI4Chem Newsletter is out, and you can read it here. Most of the things we already covered in past blogs, but great overview and too much to cover it in this short news digest, so check it out yourself.
NFDI4Chem – Chemiedozententagung
NFDI4Chem also has some other news. First of all they were present at the Chemiedozententagung, you can find the short report here. It is noteworthy, that this time (I guess for the first time) there was a whole session on digitization in chemistry. I think this is a good sign, and I hope to see more of those dedicated sessions about how we want to step in the future in natural science, how we want to deal with the challenges ahead.
NFDI4Chem – New InChI version
A new InChi version was published, you can find out more about it here. It is announced that incorporation of molecular inorganics is planned for the summer of this year, which is really great news. I am looking forward to hear more about it and will keep you posted.
NFDI4Chem & PSDI – WorldFAIR workshop
As already mentioned in the FAIRmat part of this post today, standardisation is key if we are talking about FAIR data. In this WorldFAIR workshop many different projects, organisations, publishers and others discussed the topic of “business models for digital chemical standards development”. You can read the short report here, a white paper will follow.
PSDI – Towards data sharing service for PSDI
PSDI was part of the meeting at CERN dealing with the topic of sharing and synchronising data and presented their ideas on how such a system can be built up and established within the PSDI. You can read the short report here and find the slides on Zenodo.
eLabFTW – Video tutorial
eLabFTW is an electronic lab notebook for natural science in general (or even beyond this). They just published a new tutorial series about eLabFTW v.5.0. The series consists of nine short videos that explain how to use the ELN and the basic functionalities. It is a great resource and if you plan to use eLabFTW or are already using it, you should definetly check them out. There is always something new to learn.
The FAIR Elephant – The Chemotion Files – Case 002
Also, some news from myself. I just published the second case of The Chemotion Files, you can read more about it here.
Zenodo uploads:
Just one upload which is not already mentioned in the news digests:
PSDI
PSDI uploaded the slide to a keynote talk by Jeremy Frey with the title: “Will an AI win the next Chemistry Nobel Prize and replace us?”. Just from the slides, I would guess it was a fun and entering talk and definitely worth checking out the slides.

That is it for this week. I wish you a nice Easter break! Thanks for reading and until next time!
