News Digest – RDM in Natural Science: Week 24, 2025

Welcome to the latest News Digest! Each week, I explore the latest developments in research data management, focusing specifically on natural sciences, and provide a concise overview. Let’s dive right in!

DAPHNE4NFDI

DAPHNE4NFDI is the consortium for DAta from PHoton and Neutron Experiments of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

New Zenodo uploads

Two presentations on the use of ontologies to improve experimental documentation. Both were part of the DAPHNE4NFDI TA1 Data for science lecture series in April 2025.

eLabFTW

eLabFTW is a free and open source electronic lab notebook developed by Deltablot.

Recording of Community Meeting available

The recording of the latest community meeting of eLabFTW is now available on YouTube. During the meeting, two main topics were discussed. The first one is the integration of Open Closing. Developer Manuel Lera-Ramirez gives more insides about the software and how to use it inside eLabFTW:

In the other part of the meeting, some of the most resent changes were shown and discussed. You can also check the blog entry, for more information about the latest developments.

NFDI4Chem

NFDI4Chem is the Chemistry consortium for the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Report: Chemistry Data Days 2025

At the beginning of June, the Chemistry Data Days of NFDI4Chem took place in Mainz. Now a short report on the event is available on the webpage of NFDI4Chem. Two main topics were discussed during the meeting: teaching RDM in curricular and tools for the data life cycle. To learn more about the meeting, check out the report.

PSDI

PSDI is the Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure in the UK.

Two new recordings available

Two very interesting talks were uploaded to the YouTube channel of PSDI last week. The first one is on greener computing and should you just watch one video this week, I would highly recommend taking this one. There is a lot of interesting and thought-provoking information here.

The second video is on usability and if you are responsible for a website design or are developing a tool, you should keep the things mentioned in this video in mind. Also well worth watching.

New Zenodo upload

PSDI published a report on how to handle physical chemistry property data, developed standards and methods to collect, store and reuse different types of spectroscopic data. Check out the report on Zenodo.

The FAIR Elephant

Learn more about the offering and services that I offer through The FAIR Elephant here.

Workshops with DECHEMA

Do you want to boost your research data management? You want to learn how to start implementing new workflows to organize your data and work from the beginning and future-proof your research? Make sure you do not miss my three workshops with DECHEMA in September and October. The first workshop will cover all the basics and give clear starting points for to improve your data handling. Followed up with a workshop on publishing research data and the funder requirements. The last workshops will then go into more details on how to establish an electronic lab notebook. Follow the links below for more information. All tthree workshops will be in German.
