News Digest – RDM in Natural Science: Week 33 & 34

After a one week without a News Digest, due to holidays, I am now back with a new one, covering the weeks 33 & 34. The different NFDI consortia seem to use the repository Zenodo more and more, so there a quite some new uploads here. So let us dive in and check out what’s new.

DAPHNE4NFDI

DAPHNE4NFDI is the consortium for DAta from PHoton and Neutron Experiments of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Zenodo

A poster about SciCat, a metadata catalogue which is used by research infrastructures, to organize and connect data and metadata was published on Zenodo. To really understand what SciCat does, I would also recommend checking out the official documentation and maybe some videos. It looks very interesting and I need to have a closer look at it.

eLabFTW

eLabFTW is a free and open source electronic lab notebook developed by Deltablot.

Youtub

New features for eLabFTW that will be available in version v.5.1 are shown in a new video by the eLabFTW team. If you are working with eLabFTW it is a must to check it out, for everybody else: it is a good opportunity to see what eLabFTW is capable of. So take a look right now:

NFDI4Cat

NFDI4Cat is the consortium for sciences related to catalysis of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Zenodo

Quite a lot is going on in the Zenodo-Community of NFDI4Cat. Slides on the topic of RDM with catalytic data, and how to actually make your data more fair, with showing direct examples were published, as well as a bunch of uploads (posters and presentations) regarding ontologies and vocabularies, as well as the catalytic-specific vocabulary Voc4Cat.

NFDI4Earth

NFDI4Earth is the Consortium Earth System Sciences of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Which data is worth archiving? This question was discussed during a workshop in December 2023 specifically for data in bio- and geoscience. The report was now published (only in German) and I have to say, it is very interesting and a discussion we need to have, not only in bio- and geoscience but in all fields. So I recommend checking it out, and no worries. The PDF file has 53 pages, but only the first 9 are the report. The rest of the pages are slides from presentations given during the workshop.
And there was another interesting thing uploaded, the executive summary of the NFDI4Earth Academy. The NFDI4Earth Academy offers tailored trainings, networking and fosters interdisciplinary research. Reading the executive summary can be useful, but I also recommend checking out the website here.

Do you find these New Digests useful? Then you can help me with liking, sharing and commenting to reach more people. Let them know that with The FAIR Elephant, it is much easier to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in research data management in natural science. As always, if you know of a project, initiative or something else, from which I should include news updates in this weekly overview, please let me know. So, that’s it for today. Thank you for reading, and see you next week!
