News Digest – RDM in Natural Science: Week 36 – 39

After a break due to holidays, the News Digest is back. This time we have to cover four weeks, so basically the whole September, which means the News Digest is a little bit longer than usually. So let us dive in directly.

DAPHNE4NFDI

DAPHNE4NFDI is the consortium for DAta from PHoton and Neutron Experiments of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Zenodo

There is a new presentation about DAPHNE4NFDI available at Zenodo, very useful in case you need an introduction to the work of this consortium. And then there was uploaded a new version of a poster about SciCat, the metadata catalogue for research infrastructures, originally published in August 2024.

NOMAD CAMLES videos

FAIRmat is developing a measurement software for experimental physics with FAIR data in mind, called NOMAD CAMELS. They published a short introductory video (see below) as well as some user statements (see playlist here)

Zenodo

The version v1.4.1of NOMAD CAMELS was published to Zenodo, as well as a NOMAD Plugin for material processing data.

MaRDI

MaRDI is the Mathematical Research Data Initiative, a consortium of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Newsletter

The latest newsletter was published in September. As always, in this News Digest, I just want to highlight one thing, but you should definitely check out the whole newsletter here. This time it is the article with the title “The Four-Color Theorem”, specifically the part “The lost and found proofs. A cautionary tale of Research Data”. It is very interesting to read how the proof of the Four-Color Theorem was nearly lost multiple times and how computers changed mathematics. I recommend taking the time to read the article. (It can also help to take a look at the YouTube channel Numberphile for an introduction into the Four-Color Theorem here)

NFDI4Cat

NFDI4Cat is the consortium for sciences related to catalysis of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Digital Chemist Award

Until October 18, 2024, you have the chance to apply for the Digital Chemist Award by NFDI4Cat. You can find out more about the award and submit your application here.

Interview with Prof. Norbert Kockmann on the importance of ontologies in RDM

In an interview, Prof. Norbert Kockmann from NFDI4Cat answer question on the importance of metadata standards and ontologies in research data management. You can read the full interview here (in German).

Seinen eigenen Forschungsraum noch mal mit neuen Augen zu sehen, ist eine Bereicherung.

Prof. Norbert Kockmann

Zenodo

An updated version of the Voc4Cat guidelines have been published (Version 2.0). The original guidelines were published in March 2023 (Version 1.0 Beta).

NFDI4Chem

NFDI4Chem is the Chemistry consortium for the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

FAIR4Chem Award 2025

There is another award, the FAIR4Chem Award 2025 by NFDI4Chem, the submission of applications is possible until November 17, 2024, possible. You can find out more about the award here. Are you unsure, whether you should apply for the award? Check the Hall of Fame to learn more about the past awardees and their projects.

Event Reports: Metadatathon and Metadata4Chem Meeting (with PSDI)

NFDI4Chem is reporting on two events from earlier this summer, both focussing on metadata, you can read both short reports here.

Zenodo

An exercises catalogue with 27 chemistry specific FAIR RDM exercises is now available on Zenodo, the exercises are part of the two-day workshop “FAIR RDM: Basics for Chemists” by NFDI4Chem. Furthermore, the latest version of the Chemotion Converter app was published (now version v1.3.0) and a poster focussing on the Semantic Data Hub of NFDI4Chem.

NFDI4Earth

NFDI4Earth is the Consortium Earth System Sciences of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Cooperation with re3data

NFDI4Earth announced a closer cooperation with re3data with the goal of “developing metadata schemas that meet the Earth System Sciences community’s requirements…”, you can find out more about the cooperation here.

3rd Call for Incubator Projects

The next incubator project call was published, until October 31, 2024 you have the chance to submit your innovative projects and receive funding for 3-6 months. You can find out more about the call here.

Zenodo

There are a few uploads to the NFDI4Earth community, I will only highlight a few of them, but you can see the full list below. Data from survey results among marine micropalaeontologists are published. There is more information about the already mentioned incubator projects, as well as documentation on OneStop4All, the future access point to resources and services of NFDI4Earth.

Conference overview

There were and are many conferences in September and October. PUNCH4NFDI publish a short overview of where you can find them this fall, so check out their overview here.

The FAIR Elephant

I am thrilled to announce that on October 24, 2024 I will give a Deep Dive Talk at the Life Science Factory with the title: From chaos to clarity: transform your research data into a competitive edge. You can find more information about the event on LinkedIn (here) or the webpage of the Life Science Factory (here, you need to scroll down to “Start-up Deep Dive”). You will learn more about the event on the social media accounts of the FAIR Elephant (LinkedIn, BlueSky and Mastodon).

That is it for today, thank you for reading. It is good to be back and see you next week!
