Welcome to the News Digest – RDM in Natural Science. Each week, I explore the latest developments in research data management, focusing specifically on natural sciences, and provide a concise overview. Let us dive right in.

NFDI4Earth

Better access to governmental data

Within the Earth System Sciences and therefore in NFDI4Earth governmental data are an important resource and in the past many of the reports about governmental data where features in this weekly News Digest. In the latest report by Astrid Ziemann and Klaus-Peter Wenz provide seven recommendations to improve the discoverability and use of these governmental data. The report is most useful for infrastructure operators and data providers.

From dataset-centric to workflow-centric research

Staying on the topic of governmental data, in the following white paper Astrid Ziemann and Matthias Mauder provide a first draft of a reference research workflows that incorporates data from governmental data infrastructure. Using the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) as an example eight recommendations are developed to shift from dataset-centric to a workflow-centric research.

The FAIR Elephant

Ask The Elephant

On Thursday (October 8), it is time for the next meeting of the Ask The Elephant Community. This monthly early morning meeting (usually at 8 am), is an open discussion for all people interested in research data management questions. This Thursday we will have a look at the recently published RDM checklist by NFDi4Chem, as well as other checklists currently out there. And a small teaser: In the meeting in November we will have a look at version 6 of eLabFTW. For more information about the Ask The Elephant Community check out the link below.
