Welcome to the last news digest of 2024, and we have quite a few updates, so don’t let us waste time and jump in directly.

FAIRmat

FAIRmat is the FAIR Data Infrastructure for Condensed-Matter Physics and the Chemical Physics of Solids, a consortium of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Zenodo

Two posters were uploaded to Zenodo, both from the annual DGKK + DEMBE Workshop 2024. The first one is on the topic of NOMAD in general and the second one on how to use NOMAD to enhance metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) synthesis. Furthermore, there is a new version of the NOMAD schema plugin for simulation workflow.

MaRDI

MaRDI is the Mathematical Research Data Initiative, a consortium of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Newsletter

MaRDI published their latest newsletter, and they made a slight change to it. From now on, in each newsletter, they will present one service. Starting with MathAlgoDB –  “the peer-reviewed knowledge graph of numerical algorithms”. If you would like to know more about, MathAlgoDB (with a short demonstration on how to use it) and learn how to contribute; check out the video by MaRDI:

You can find the complete newsletter here: https://mailchi.mp/d9ee661e5698/math-data-quarterly-11-a-knowledge-graph-for-algorithms?e=f319c80539

NFDI4Cat

NFDI4Cat is the consortium for sciences related to catalysis of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Zenodo

A new version of Voc4Cat, a vocabulary for the catalysis disciplines. There are some changes to the structure, new added terms (e.g. for reactor types) and improvements for the documentation. You can check out the full change log on GitHub: https://github.com/nfdi4cat/voc4cat/releases/tag/v2024-12-17.

NFDI4Chem

NFDI4Chem is the Chemistry consortium for the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

New functions for RADAR4Chem

Very exciting news from RADAR4Chem Repository development team: with the new beta version there is the possibility to directly import GitHub repositories. This feature is known from other repositories (e.g. Zenodo) and to see it now added to RADAR4Chem, a chemistry-specific repository, is fantastic. With the new beta version, there are also some improvements to the metadata as well as the RADAR API. Check out the full report here: https://www.nfdi4chem.de/new-functions-for-radar4chem/

Workshop on data literacy

Prof. Sonja Herres-Pawlis from NFDI4Chem was invited to a workshop focussing on the topic of data literacy. She provided insides from NFDI4Chem as well as NFDI section EduTrain. Reporting on DALIA. a search portal for data literacy education resources. Read the full report as well as more information about DALIA here: https://www.nfdi4chem.de/nfdi4chem-at-the-workshop-focussing-on-data-competence/.

3rd Ontologies4Chem Workshop 2024

The report about the 3rd workshop on ontologies in chemistry was published, the three-day online event took place in December. You can check out the full report, with links to the agenda and all slides from the three days, following the link below. The recordings of the many of the presentations will be uploaded in the future. So we are looking forward to that and will then take a closer look.

PSDI

PSDI is the Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure in the UK.

Recording & Slides of PSDI Webinar on KnowLedger

The recording, as well as the slides, of the last PSDI webinar were published. The topic this time was project (and software) KnowLedger – “an  open ecosystem for research data management” which is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and will start in January 2025. Honestly, I am a little bit on the fence with this one, for various reasons, but check it out yourself, the video is definitely worth checking out. And let me know in the comments what you think about KnowLedger. You will find the slides here: https://zenodo.org/records/14531241 and here is the recording:

PUNCH4NFDI

PUNCH4NFDI is the Particles, Universe, NuClei and Hadrons for the NFDI consortium of the NFDI, the National Research Data Infrastructure in Germany.

Event Review: PUNCH4NFDI Annual Meeting

In November, the annual meeting of PUNCH4NFDI took place in Bonn. Now a short report on the meeting has been published, as well as the meeting agenda and some more information about the meeting. Check the PUNCH4NFDI website for more information: https://indico.desy.de/event/45458/.

The FAIR Elephant

Last week, I gave my first workshop for the Digital Research Academy (https://digital-research.academy/), with the title: “The RDM Rope: Step-by-Step to a Research Data Management Strategy Tailored to Your Needs”. I want to thank all the participants for the great workshop, as well as the feedback. I got some valuable ideas on how to improve the idea of representing RDM strategies with a rope, to simplify the communication about data management. You can find the slides on Zenodo: https://zenodo.org/records/14497987.

This was the last News Digest of 2024. I want to thank you for the support during the year and reading these news overviews each week. I already have some plans on how to improve these in the next year. So stay tune, and I hope to see you back in 2025. Let us work together on improving how we handle research and future-proof your work.
